Police rescues woman suspected to be a witch by villagers

GAURIPUR, Oct 28 - Timely action taken by the police of Rupshi Police Outpost in rescuing an ailing woman, who was suspected to be a witch, has been appreciated by all the enlightened people of Parbatjhora subdivision under BTAD in Kokrajhar district.

It is reported that Akali Rava, aged about 38 years and having a son was ailing since sometime back. Her husband had died a few years ago and she was taking shelter in her mother�s house at Marshuljhora Pt-II under Kazigaon police station. Some illiterate people of the village, suspecting her to be a witch, wrapped her in a fishing net and confined her to a lonely place near her residence. The matter came to the knowledge of the police and they rushed to the spot and rescued her. It has also been reported that the widow was mentally depressed as she had lost her husband untimely. She was timely admitted to the Gauripur CHC on Friday and was stated to have fully recovered. The police took her to the village and handed her over to her brother on Saturday.

An awareness meeting was also arranged by the SDPO Dipak Kumar Das and O/C G Sarkar of Rupshi police outpost at the spot, which was attended by the people of the locality and the speakers tried to clear the villagers� superstition.
