GUWAHATI, July 30 - With the Monsoon session of the Assam Legislative Assembly and the Independence Day approaching, the city police force has been put on high alert to thwart any attempt by the militants to indulge in acts of violence in the city.

Normally the Monsoon session of the State Assembly is held in the month of July, leaving the forces enough time to prepare for the Independence Day. But this time, the Assembly session will be held from August 10 to 14 and there will be no time for the forces to prepare for the Independence Day. That is why, the city police has already started preparations for both the events.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, City Police Commissioner, Mukesh Agarwala said that the threat perception to the city has already been reviewed in a meeting between the police, intelligence agencies and officers of the Central forces and both offensive and defensive mechanism were chalked out.

Agarwala said that a close watch is being maintained in the entry routes to the city and deployment in such areas has been increased. He said that patrolling in the vulnerable areas and river patrolling have been intensified, while, even hotels are being checked regularly.

On the protection of the venue of the Independence Day celebrations, Agarwala said that the Veterinary College ground has already been taken over by the police and anti-sabotage checking is going on. The field is guarded round the clock and senior officers including himself have been visiting the field to review the security arrangements regularly, he added.

The City Police Commissioner said that efforts are on to make optimum utilization of the available forces. However, considering the fact that the Assembly session and the Independence Day are coinciding, the City Police may have to request the Government to bring in additional forces from other districts to take care of the security arrangements, he said.
