Police Blues edge out Sunrise

GUWAHATI, July 31 In an ill tempered match of the RG Baruah Super Division Football League of Guwahati Sports Association, Assam Police Blues inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Sunrise Athletic Club.

It was a clumsy match at the Nehru Stadium here today, as altogether four players, three of Police were booked and one Police player was given the marching order.

Policemen were reduced to a 10-men brigade in the 60th minute when their defender Mandeep Marak was sent off by referee Pijus Biswas. But despite playing with one man short, Police Blues successfully defended their fort in the remaining 30 minutes.

Anticipating a pass from captain Robijit Jugdung, Joseph Maslai gave his team the lead in the 23rd minute.

In the 41st minute, Tonay Halder levelled the score line with an angular grounder. Tonay was little bit lucky that the ball hit the upright and entered into the goal. He was little late in shooting and the angle was almost blocked.

It was Police substitute Bijoy Borgohain who beat the Sunrise custodian Manish Chetry in the 59th minute with an intelligent placement at the far corner. Anticipating a pass from Sarbananda Sonowal, Bijoy toed the ball into the goal.

The policemen lost their temper despite taking the lead twice. Had they played their usual game adopting attacking tactics, the margin could have been bigger.

On the other hand, Sunrise players were not in good touch today as they were against FCI in the previous match. Their foreign recruits Agyekum Enoch Amof and Stanley Okechi failed to impress on the Police defence. Okachi in particular was quite ineffective and as a result their striking force virtually became toothless.

Police defenders were also not in peak form today and were forced to make mistakes. But poor shooting at the goal by the Sunrise strikers saved them on a couple of occasions.

SAI, Rajbari play 1-1: SAI Sports Club and Rajbari Athletic Club played a 1-1 draw in their A Division League match for the Jibeswar Goswami Trophy at the Nehru Stadium here today.

Ranbir Singh scored for Rajbari in the 72nd minute while Subhankan Rabha netted the equaliser in the 82nd minute off a spot kick.
