GUWAHATI, Jan 24 Tributes were paid in memory of the great Assamese poet Raghunath Choudhary on the occasion of his 136th birthday recently.

The memorial function organized on the occasion by Guwahati Sabita Sabha was presided over by Dr Banikanta Sarma. Inaugurating the function, DN Chakravartty said that Choudhary was a towering figure among the first stream of romantic poets of Assam with their initiation in the pages of Jonaki the first monumental mouthpiece of modern Assamese literature. Chief guest Prof Ranjit Kumar Deva Goswami described Choudhary not only as a poet of birds (bihogi kavi), but who was pre-eminently a poet of nature. Choudhary drew his inspiration from Indian classical literature and pristine Indian thought, he said.
