GUWAHATI, April 16 The Assamese community in Perth, Australia celebrated Rongali Bihu on April 12 with fanfare, a press release stated.
Though not the biggest down under, consisting of about 20 families, the Assamese community there tried their best to recreate those profound Bihu memories back home. They got together at the Richard Rushton Community Center in Perth to celebrate the occasion with fun and feast.
The day also saw a quiz contest and a musical chair game for the young children, followed by a brief tekeli bhonga session for the adults. Amidst regular rounds of tea and Bihu delicacies like pitha and laru, there were also programmes like Mukoli Bihu, fashion show, comic acts, etc. A colourful cultural function followed these events where M Subbarayudu, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Perth was the chief guest. He was very pleased and appreciative of the efforts taken by the Assamese community in keeping traditional cultures alive in a far away land.
The cultural programme ended with the rendition of the number O Mor Aponar Desh.
