SILCHAR, May 7 - Following the announcement of Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, a professor of Statistics at Gauhati University as the new Vice-Chancellor of Assam University Silchar, people of Barak valley, including students of the university, have expressed great joy in having a local heading the institution of higher studies.

Jalalpur, a small village under Katigorah constituency in Cachar district surrounded by tea gardens bordering Meghalaya and Bangladesh has a massive reason to rejoice. Born and brought up in the village, Prof Nath had his primary education from Bishambarpur LP School and did his schooling from Baleshwar High School.

Sharing his happiness, Dr Pinak Pani Dhar, professor in the Department of Surgery at Silchar Medical College, said I am extremely happy to see someone from my village being appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of our dream university. He has been an ideal for us at Jalalpur. Besides his academic achievements, Prof Nath is known for his social concerns.

A former Deputy Inspector of Schools, Cachar, Bidyutjyoti Purkayastha, who also hails from the same village, was elated while talking to this correspondent. He said it is a matter of great joy and the whole of Jalalpur is getting ready to felicitate Prof Nath after he assumes office. Noted journalist and a citizen of Jalalpur, Pijush Kanti Das said, I am feeling proud as a local. This will encourage the future generation of the village as well.

On the other hand, students of the university have also welcomed the announcement. Amar Jyoti Khound, president of the Assam University Students Union, said, we are happy to have our permanent Vice-Chancellor for which we have been waiting since November 2015. A lot of issues concerning the students are lying pending and we hope that the new Vice- Chancellor will attend those with priority.

Interestingly, members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) had alleged that the RSS was trying to take control of the university by calling the shots from its headquarters at Nagpur. In a recent meeting held here, Kamrul Islam Choudhury, national secretary of the students union said, ever since the BJP Government came to power, it has been on a mission to saffronise the institutions of higher studies in India.
