GUWAHATI, Dec 1 Many prominent intellectuals of the State have criticised the move of the Government to update the NRC of the State, calling it an anti-Constitutional action.

In the name of updating the NRC, it is a ploy to provide Indian citizenship to several lakh illegal migrants who entered the State from 1951 to 1971, a joint statement released by the intellectuals stated.

The Government is violating the Clause VI of second part of the Constitution. It is a well-planned strategy designed through amending the Citizenship Act of 1955 in 1985, 1986 and 2003 to provide citizenship to foreign nationals, said noted journalist Dhirendra Nath Bezboruah, educationists Bisweswar Hazarika and Dr Satyendra Narayan Goswami, former DIG Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharyya, among others, through the statement.
