No exodus from Gujarat, Congress spreading rumours: minister

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 - Amidst reports of migrants fleeing Gujarat after attacks on them in several parts of the state, a senior minister of the State today said the reports of exodus were rumours spread by the Congress.

Lok Sabha polls are nearing and the Congress is losing ground everywhere. They are now indulging in such mischief. But people of the State are not supporting them, Gujarats Agriculture Minister RC Faldu told journalists here.

He said there are thousands of migrants in Gujarat working in business houses in different towns. This is a festive season, and people do visit their home States. There is no such exodus as is being spread. People are linking this to the incident, the minister said.

He alleged that the Congress had been trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the State.

The Gujarat government stands by all migrants working in the State. Those indulging in violence have been taken into custody, he added.

There had been reports of attacks on migrant people in the State after the rape of the 14-month-old girl allegedly by a migrant in Himmatnagar district. Hundreds of migrants are reported to be fleeing Gujarat out of fear. More than 300 people have been arrested in six districts for inciting violence.
