AGARTALA, Sept 5 - Banned militant outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) has sent extortion notices to three village committee chairmen in Dhalai district, the police said today.

Extortion notices were sent to the chairmen of Purba Potacherra, Raima and Boalkhali villages on Tuesday, OC of Raisyabari PS, Soleman Reang told reporters.

Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order), Smriti Ranjan Das said the police have received complaints from villagers and investigation is on.

We will alert the BSF as those villages are near the Chittagong Hill Tract of Bangladesh and patrolling by the State police force was intensified in the area, Das said, adding a small splinter group of the NLFT has makeshift camps inside the Chittagong Hill Tract.

When tribal cultivators go to collect forest produce, the ultras hand over some extortion notices and direct them to drop the notices near government offices or near someones house. The cultivators are forced to do that, Das said. PTI
