NFR staffers awarded for devotion towards duty

GUWAHATI, July 22 - The Northeast Frontier Railway recently presented awards to 12 staff members for showing alertness and exceptional devotion towards their duty.

The staff members rewarded are carriage and wagon helper Birendra Kumar Shivam, station managers Mukesh Kumar and Nitai Sarkar, track maintainers Vijay Kumar Rai and Baleshwar Sahani, drivers Ashoke Kumar Murmu, Tribhuban Narzary, Rupjyoti Saikia and Prasanta Ghosh, and assistant drivers Rakesh Kumar, Md Muglay Azam and GK Srivastava.

Narzary and Rakesh Kumar saved a herd of about 15 elephants by applying emergency brakes on a train at a place in the Pancharatna-Goalpara Town section under Rangiya division on May 18.

Saikia and Azam, while working on a train on May 7, noticed an elephant suddenly running on the track at a place between Gogamukh and Boginadi stations under Rangiya division. They applied emergency brakes and the train stopped before hitting the elephant.

Ghosh and Srivastava, while on duty on a train on May 2, noticed a herd of around 10 elephants crossing the track at a place between Patharkhola and Lanka stations under Lumding division. They immediately applied the emergency brakes and stopped the train, thus averting an accident.

Murmu, while working on a train on May 22, was injured when some miscreants pelted stones at the driver�s cabin at a place under Alipurduar division. Despite suffering severe injury to his face and bleeding, he managed to clear the section by driving the train slowly up to the next station at Dhumdangi.

Rai and Sahani detected a derailed wagon at a place between New Jalpaiguri and Rangapani stations on May 21 and stopped the movement of trains. Shivam and Mukesh Kumar detected defective wagons while performing their duties at Katihar and averted probable accidents.

All of them were presented a cash award of Rs 3,000 each, along with a certificate issued by the NF Railway General Manager.
