DERGAON, April 25 - The new wholesale market of local vegetables initiated by the Golaghat district administration has gained its momentum today after three days of its opening.
Amidst extension of lockdown in Assam as well as the nation, the farmer community has been adversely affected along with other sections of the society.
The Golaghat district administration in association with the District Agriculture Department started a wholesale market at an abandoned bus stand at Arengapara in Golaghat on Wednesday.
During the last three days, a total of Rs 2,88,619 was collected from the vegetables sold and a total of 141.67 quintals of vegetables sold in the market. Farmers from remote corners of the district sold these vegetables to wholesale traders.
As a result of the lockdown, the vegetable produce of the farmers in the district were damaged and the farmers did not find any place to sell their produce.
Moreover, the farmers had to sell their produce in very less price than the market price as the middlemen took away the profits.
Considering this, the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Bibhash Ch Modi in association with the District Agricultural Department arranged the wholesalt market where the farmers were able to sell their produce directly to the wholesalers. With this, the farmers were also able to know the real price of the vegetables.
Assistant Commissioner and DIPRO in-charge, who is also closely associated with the wholesale market, Papu Gogoi said that the idea behind the market was to give justice to poor farmers.
�By this move, we are trying to sensitise the poor farmers about the actual prices of their vegetable produce. It is thought that it will break the bridge built by the middlemen between the farmers and wholesalers,� Papu Gogoi said.
