GUWAHATI, March 19 - The new flyover being constructed to connect the RG Baruah Road and the Rajendra Prasad Road over the existing overbridge on the Guwahati-Shillong (GS) Road at Ganeshguri Chariali here, is in no way going to ease the traffic-related problems on either road.
This observation was made by president of voluntary organisation Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) Krishno Kanto Borooah while speaking to this newspaper.
Borooah appreciated the State government�s move to construct some new flyovers and overbridges in the city to ease the traffic-related problems as a positive one. But the flyover proposed by the government to connect the RG Baruah Road and the Rajendra Prasad Road is not going to solve the traffic-related problems on both the roads if it is not connected with the existing overbridge at the Ganeshguri Chariali point with a roundabout, he said.
Moreover, the existing overbridge at the Ganeshguri Chariali point should also be provided with an arm to connect it with the Hengrabari Road.
He informed that about seven months back, he had raised these points before the present PWD Minister seeking his intervention for initiating corrective measures. But the Minister referred him to an official of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), who reluctantly invited Borooah to a meeting, but preferred to remain absent at the specified time.
Borooah, then a 77-year-old senior citizen, left the GMDA office by leaving his contact number with the personal assistant of the GMDA officer, following an assurance that he would soon be intimated of the new schedule of the said meeting. This development took place in the last part of August, 2018. Since then, Borooah has been waiting for the invitation from the GMDA officer for the past seven months.
In the meantime, the foundation stone of the RG Baruah Road-Rajendra Prasad Road connecting flyover has been laid by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
