New committee of Muslim Kalyan Parishad formed

DIBRUGARH, March 6 - A general meeting of the Upper Assam Muslim Kalyan Parishad was held on March 3 at the Naliapool Musafirkhana here, with Sehir Ahmed in the Chair. The Parishad is a leading association of indigenous Assamese Muslims. The meeting was attended by several of the parishad�s central executive committee, including Shaukat Latif and Manirul Islam Bora.

At the end of the deliberations, a new executive committee of the Dibrugarh district unit of the parishad was constituted, with Muhibul Ahmed as president, Imran Hussain as working president, Altaf Hussain as vice president, Imdad Ali as general secretary and 37 executive members. At the same meeting the district unit of the Parishad�s women�s wing was also re-constituted with Rehana Banu as president, Semim Akhtara as working president and Zahida Rahman as secretary.

Earlier, various speakers like Dr Sazid Ahmed, Dr Muhibul Islam, Nasir Sultan, Nur Mohammed and Abdul Khalek spoke on various aspects of the indigenous Assamese Muslim population, their wants and grievances, and their role in the society. They highlighted the social, political and economic backwardness of this section of the Assamese society, and presented certain remedies to overcome these. They hoped that the Parishad will take proactive part in the uplift of the indigenous Assamese Muslims.
