GUWAHATI, Dec 5 The North East Students Organisation (NESO), comprising Khasi Students Union, All Assam Students Union, Naga Students Federation, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Twipra Students Federation, All Manipur Students Union, Garo Students Union and All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union representing the eight major students bodies of the NE States, expressed its shock and dismay at the Centres indication to execute the land swap deal.

In a statement to the media, the umbrella body of the students unions said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modis intension to go ahead with the land swap deal, which the previous government at the Centre had signed with the Government of Bangladesh in 2011, is not acceptable to the people of the region.

The NESO expresses its utmost concern and oppose the India-Bangladesh land deal of 2011 as the issue was never informed and agreed upon by the indigenous people of the States concerned. Even though the NESO is not opposed to fencing of the international border with Bangladesh, to stop illegal infiltration, but at the same time, the NESO has always maintained that the land deal was not in the interest of the people of this region as large tracts of our land would be lost, thereby depriving our people of the precious and limited resources, added the statement.

The organisation demanded the Union government to carry out border fencing without any land swapping.
