Need to strengthen foundation of higher education: Arunachal Guv

ITANAGAR, Feb 17 - Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (retd) Dr BD Mishra on Monday called for reinforcing the foundation of higher education by making primary and secondary education �progressive and broad-based�.

�Higher education is the result of continuous educational growth. Its foundation needs to be strong. Therefore, the need is to make primary, secondary, college teaching and studying, progressive and broad based,� the Governor said while inaugurating the 20th Higher and Technical Education Conference at the Dorjee Khandu Auditorium of the Legislative Assembly.

For this, the Governor suggested the basic action points of sending every child to school and the need for guardians to inculcate �start-up� and �entrepreneurial tendency� among their school-going children. �There is and will always be a mismatch between the large work force accretion and limited job availability avenues,� he said.

Underscoring the need for a change in the mindset of society towards education, and effective implementation of education policies, Mishra said education must be for enabling the individuals and not only certification for securing jobs.

The Governor emphasised on the need for an education system improvement wave to perk up the system encompassing all elements of quality education � competent teachers, effective teaching-learning environment, and regular assessment of education being imparted.

He stressed that selection of faculty must be totally merit based and there must be appraisal system of teachers. He urged teachers and students to work with �nation-first� attitude and take their profession as a nation-building measure.

The Governor advised all stakeholders attending the conference to discuss the important themes of higher education and its strategies, and debate on innovative practices for introduction in colleges.

During the inaugural session, the Governor also felicitated retired lecturer CK Singh with the Lifetime Teachers� Award, besides conferring the Outstanding College Teachers� Award on Dr Temin Payum, assistant professor (Botany) at JN College, Pasighat and S Suresh Kumar, principal in-charge of Govt Polytechnic, Namsai.

He also awarded the Governor�s cash award to toppers in the undergraduate examinations for 2019 to Bamin Rinya (Education), Tah Sonam (Botany), Aina Moyong (Maths) and Yangchin Drema J (BCom).

Dr Kento Kadu of JNC Pasighat received the Best NSS Programme Officer Award, while DNGC Itanagar received the Best NSS Unit Award. Nabam Narba of Don Bosco College, Jollang, and Gede Basar of JNC Pasighat received the Best Volunteer Award from Education Minister Taba Tedir.

The Governor also released the NSS & RUSA Newsletter 2019 and �Basic Information on Higher Education�. Higher and Technical Education Director Dr Tayek Talom was also present during the function.
