NAGAON, May 6 - Tension has been prevailing in the town due to failure of the police administration to control anti-social elements here since yesterday.

It is learnt that a girl from Golaghat came to meet her brother who resides at Khutikotia area on the outskirts of the town. When both of them were moving towards their rented house in the evening, a group of 4-5 anti-social elements attacked them, following which the boy was seriously injured, while the girl was raped by the group.

Later, local people admitted the duo to hospital. A suspect named Rafique was subsequently picked up by police and interrogation is going on. Police also nabbed a suspected drug peddler named Azibur for questioning.

However, alleging failure of police to nab the culprits, a section of infuriated locals blocked the National Highway for several hours. People also burnt the residence of the alleged culprits who were involved in the rape, but are still absconding.

It has been widely claimed here that due to political patronage of history-sheeters, police has failed to take strict action against anti-social elements, including drug peddlers since the last several years. As a result, flesh trade is also flourishing in Nagaon town.

In the meantime, AASU, AJYCP, Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad and other organisations have condemned the incident and demanded prompt punitive action against the culprits.

The police on its part has assured to intensify action against drugs runners and other anti-social elements, while the Deputy Commissioner assured this Correspondent that exemplary punishment will be meted out to the perpetrators of the aforementioned crime.
