DIBRUGARH, Nov 18 � Tej Hazarika, the son of Assam�s beloved Dr Bhupen Hazarika today laid the foundation stone of the proposed statue of his father and a sports and cultural complex near Rajgarh Higher Secondary School, Rajgarh, some 70 kilometres from here.
Tej, his wife Candice Lynn Hamilton Hazarika, son Sage Akash Hazarika and Sandipan Hazarika, nephew of Dr Bhupen Hazarika landed from a chopper at the school ground for the foundation laying ceremony of the proposed project at Rajgarh.
Former Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal accompanied the Hazarika family to the venue on the chopper. The Hazarika family first laid floral wreathes at the portrait of Dr Hazarika at the venue and spent a few moments in silent prayer.
The people of greater Tingkhong and Rajgarh have desired to erect a statue of the legendary musical icon Bhupenda and construct a sports and cultural complex at Rajgarh. The project with an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore will be executed by Dr Bhupen Hazarika Sports and Cultural Project Committee. The committee is headed by Ashok Gogoi and Dulal Dutta of Rajgarh. The funds for the project will be drawn mainly by way of donations from the people of greater Tingkhong and Rajgarh.
While addressing the assembled public, Tej Hazarika greeted the people in Assamese. He expressed his gratitude to the people for showing their sincere love and affection to his father. �I am indeed very happy and also grateful to the people of Rajgarh for inviting me to the foundation stone laying ceremony of the proposed cultural complex in memory of my late father. I have become speechless since my arrival in Guwahati, experiencing the profound grief, love and respect of the people of Assam, as shown to the departed soul (Bhupenda). My father was a great humanist. He lived in the hearts of the people of Assam�, he said.
Speaking on the proposed project, Tej called upon the people to join hands for the succesful completion of the dream project.
Candice Lynn Hamilton Hazarika, Sage Akash Hazarika and Sandipan Hazarika also thanked the people for their love in their short speeches.
