MV Bhupen Hazarika to ferry Majuli residents

JORHAT, Oct 9 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is scheduled to launch the modern RO RO (Roll-on/Roll-Off) vessel service on Thursday between Kamalabari Ghat and Nimati Ghat.

Sonowal, who will be in Majuli on October 11 to attend the two day (October 10-11), BJP state executive meet, will be inaugurating the service at Kamalabari Ghat on Thursday afternoon.

A Majuli district administration source said that the vessel christened as MV Bhupen Hazarika, built at a cost of Rs 10 crore by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, will be able to carry over 100 passengers along with eight trucks with each weighing 25 tonnes or 25 small vehicles.

The length of the vessel, built of steel, is 46.50 metres and breadth 13.30 metres. The vessel is equipped with one main engine and two additional engines, the source stated.

The source said that the vessel was on its way to Majuli from Guwahati and is scheduled to reach Kamalabari Ghat tomorrow.

A trial run between Kamalabari Ghat and Nimati Ghat and back to Kamalabari is scheduled tomorrow, the source said.

It may be mentioned here that the Chief Minister on August 9 this year had flagged-off four modern ferry vessels of the IWT department at Kamalabari Ghat to boost the island�s connectivity with the mainland.
