Mukunda Kakati remembered

NALBARI, Sept 22 - Rich tributes were paid to Swahid Mukunda Kakati, a martyr of India�s freedom movement of 1942 at his birthplace Sonkani village under Barbhag revenue circle in Nalbari district on September 20. The open meeting presided over by Narayan Deka, MLA of Barkshetri LAC who is also the president of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Memorial Trust was addressed among others by Dilip Saikia, MP of Mangaldoi LAC, Bedabrata Misra, senior journalist of Dainik Asam, Bharat Bhusan Dev Choudhury, Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari, Rajat Ch Kalita, former professor of Barbhag College, Phanidhar Deka, former Principal, Gouri Kakati, a family member of martyr Mukunda Kakati.

Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner declared that the death anniversary of the martyr of the freedom movement will be celebrated by the district administration at Government level from next year. He added that in order to increase the interest of new generation to know about the ideals of Late Mukunda Kakati, a group of 20 students from Nalbari will be taken to Gohpur where he sacrificed his life. Similarly, the same number of students from Gohpur will be brought to Sonkani village where from Kakati went to Gohpur for business purposes. These steps will increase the interest of students to know about the martyr, he added. An essay competition will also be held by the district administration on the occasion.

Speaking in the meeting, senior journalist Bedabrata Misra recalled the supreme sacrifice of Swahid Mukunda Kakati at Gohpur police station in 1942. He called upon all concerned to utilise social media like YouTube, Facebook, radio and TV channels to popularise the ideals of sacrifice of Mukunda Kakati among the new generation. He also demanded to declare two chairs in the name of martyr Mukunda Kakati at Bhattadev University of Bajali and Kumar Bhaskar Varman Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University of Nalbari.

In his speech, MP Dilip Saikia assured all possible help. Earlier, Dr Kameswar Lahkar read out the secretarial report while Bhupen Talukdar welcomed the guests. In the morning session, the guests offered garlands on the statue of Swahid Mukunda Kakati at Sonkani village. The flag of Swahid Divas was hoisted by Samindra Mahanta.
