AIZAWL, May 19 - With the death of 18 more pigs, at least 2,592 pigs have died in Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district due to the outbreak of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Champhai Area Vawkvulh Association (CAVA) vice president K Zamlova said.

Zamlova said though the number of pig deaths has gradually decreased during the last week, a number of pigs were taken ill of which some were very serious.

He said the CAVA has convened a meeting of those who were engaged in piggery to deliberate on the suggestion by some members that all pigs in the area should be culled. It will be an extremely difficult decision to make, but we will take a decision in the interest of all stake holders, he said.

Zamlova said the Association members were in favour of permanent prohibition on import of pigs from neighbouring Myanmar where the dreaded PRRS has been prevalent for sometime. PTI
