SHILLONG, July 28 - Students from Meghalaya aspiring to enter the medical career can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Assam Government has decided to allot 10 seats to them.

Informing this here on Friday, Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek said, The Assam Government has agreed to allocate the ten seats to our students. I have received a telephonic confirmation on this from Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today.

He said that recently a letter from Assam Health Minister was received informing that they would allocate only two seats for Meghalaya students.

Thereafter, I immediately wrote back and also spoke to Sarma requesting that our students should not be denied the ten seats that were allotted to Meghalaya, he said.

In September last year, Supreme Court had passed an order in favour of Meghalaya Government after it filed a petition against the Assam Governments decision to abolish the reservation of 10 medical seats for the State.

Despite the ruling of the Supreme Court, Hek said, Yet, this year we again faced the same problem.
