SHILLONG, July 28 - Students from Meghalaya aspiring to enter the medical career can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Assam Government has decided to allot 10 seats to them.
Informing this here on Friday, Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek said, �The Assam Government has agreed to allocate the ten seats to our students. I have received a telephonic confirmation on this from Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today.�
He said that recently a letter from Assam Health Minister was received informing that they would allocate only two seats for Meghalaya students.
�Thereafter, I immediately wrote back and also spoke to Sarma requesting that our students should not be denied the ten seats that were allotted to Meghalaya,� he said.
In September last year, Supreme Court had passed an order in favour of Meghalaya Government after it filed a petition against the Assam Government�s decision to abolish the reservation of 10 medical seats for the State.
Despite the ruling of the Supreme Court, Hek said, �Yet, this year we again faced the same problem.�
