Mass rally over voters list

DIPHU, Oct 6 - A conglomerate of 24� plus organisations held a mass demonstration and took out a rally from Semson Sing Engti Memorial Park to press forward their five-point demand on Friday.

The organisations demanded deletion of names of all non-tribal voters from the voters list of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) which it termed as illegal voters. They demanded preparation of a fresh voters list as per provision made under paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

The other demands include preparation of indigenous rules and Acts by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council under the provision made under paragraph 2 sub-para 7 of the Sixth Schedule of Indian Constitution, cancellation of Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act 1886 and to replace it with customary land law, restoration of tribal customary law under paragraph 4 of the Sixth Schedule of Indian Constitution and to constitute village council under the provision of paragraph 3, sub-paragraph 1 clause (e), (f), (g), (h), (i) & (j) of the Sixth Schedule of Indian Constitution.

The procession was led by John Engti Kathar, retired IAS officer and chief adviser of the aforementioned 24 organisations. The procession was joined by hundreds of people mainly belonging to Karbi and Dimasa tribes.
