Manipur Opp parties submit memo to Governor

IMPHAL, Oct 16 - The Committee of Political Parties, a conglomerate of Opposition parties in Manipur, today submitted a memorandum containing a seven-point declaration made during a political convention here, to Governor Dr Najma Heptulla.

This was disclosed by the convener of the Committee, RK Anand, at a press conference held at the Congress Bhavan here this afternoon. The Committee comprises nine political parties which include the Congress, CPI, CPI (M), NCP, JD(S), AIFB, RSP, BSP and AAP.

It may be mentioned here that the political convention was held here on September 29. Several intellectuals, educationists and social workers, apart from political leaders including former Chief Minister and Opposition leader O Ibobi Singh, and Lok Sabha member D Raja of the CPI, participated in the convention.

The seven-point declaration condemned the midnight raid on the Manipur University hostels by armed police personnel, demanded restoration of normalcy in the university at the earliest and a judicial probe into the varsity incidents leading to the midnight raid, and opposed the implementation of the framework agreement signed between the Centre and the NSCN-IM.

The other points in the declaration include the demand to uphold democracy, secularism and socialism as enshrined in the Constitution of India, condemnation of price rise of essential commodities, and traditional demarcation of the Indo-Myanmar boundary (Manipur sector).

�During the half-an-hour discussion, our honourable Governor considered the matters seriously,� said Anand, former Congress MLA from the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa constituency in Imphal West district.

Ex-minister and former CPI Manipur State Council secretary Dr Moirangthem Nara also stated that the Committee of Political Parties would eagerly watch the Governor�s role in the fulfilment of the demands.

Former MLA Dr Ng Bijoy also addressed the press conference.
