IMPHAL, Oct 27 Miss Manipur beauty pageant scheduled to be held here on Monday has been banned by women bodies in the State accusing the organisers of commercialising the event and promoting indecent attires.

Stating that such event does not suit Manipuri culture, spokesperson of the women bodies Ibetombi said at the Manipur Press club on Friday that holding such an event in the name of peace has no meaning in the States present context. She added that the outfits to be worn during the beauty contest exhibits indecency.

Seventeen women bodies including Poriei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi Nupi Lup, Meekhol, Macha Leima, All Manipur Womens Voluntary Association, Meira Paibi Women Association Kangleipak, Chanura Lamjinglen Kangleipak, Kanglei Women Society, Chitua, Wachak, Kanglamei, Kangleichal, Eechal, Kwwa, and Nlyak are opposing the beauty pageant.

Practicing of such culture without understanding the facts of the present day turmoil is risky and the rich culture of the State may be in jeopardy, the spokesperson said. The civil organisations will not tolerate trading of womens dignity by organising such extravaganzas.
