Manikut donated by NRI inaugurated

DERGAON, May 20 - At a time when the question of losing our roots is looming large, a positive initiative is always more than welcome. It is widely accepted that members of the new generation are indifferent to their origins.

But an NRI Gitanjali Goswami alias Rascanda, originally hailing from Jorhat and presently a resident of New York Central Island, USA donated the manikut of the historic Missamara Khanikar Puthi Naamghar. The manikut donated by the NRI was constructed under the aegis of Golghat Goswami Family Memorial Trust in the fond memory of Aswini Kr Goswami and Snehlata Goswami.

The newly-constructed manikut was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora at a function held on the occasion on Sunday. The minister praised the social responsibility of NRI Gitanjali Goswami. It is pertinent to mention that Gitanjali is a fashion designer and her paat-muga dresses are widely popular in the USA. Associated with Mising cinema, she along with producer Narayan Seal has also financially helped several cancer patients.

On Sunday morning, the Guru aashan donated by Dilip Saikia was set up at the manikut by noted devotee Vaishnavite leader Chandra Hazarika.

The minister also released a book on the life and activities of Snehlata Goswami Smriti shradha aru snehmoyee maa edited by Prasenjit Kr. Goswami. Popi Dutta Neog presented a borgeet in the programme. Cinema producer Nurul Sultan donated a sum of Rs 10,000 for the development of the naamghar. The meeting was also attended by Ratneswar Dutta, Biren Thakur, Puranjay Goswami, Rajib Goswami, Dr Lukumani Goswami and Narayan Seal among others.
