JORHAT, July 3 - Majuli Deputy Commissioner Debaprasad Misra has expressed dissatisfaction over poor quality of work done by a contractor under the PWD. A Majuli district administration source told this newspaper that after receiving complaints from public about poor quality of work carried out by the contractor in the Peravari village-Hensua Balisapori stretch of the Bongaon-Balisapori road in East Majuli, the Deputy Commissioner along with Executive Engineer (Roads Division, Majuli) Rana Sarma on Tuesday visited the site for inspection.

The source informed that Misra was dismayed to see the defective and poor quality of repair work done by the contractor. Local people pointed out layers of works which were breaking away from the surface of the road.

The source said that the Deputy Commissioner was appalled by the inferior quality of repairing work done and he directed the PWD Junior Engineer, Himanta Dutta, who was in-charge of monitoring the works, to come to the site.

Misra questioned Dutta over defective and poor quality of work done by the contractor and pulled him up, the source stated.

Dutta admitted that he did not inspect the construction site personally at the time of repairing works and had deputed a fourth grade employee of the department under him, Punya Saikia to supervise instead.

The source said that following Duttas admission of dereliction of duty the Deputy Commissioner directed Sarma to fix responsibility for the irregularity done in the project and initiate departmental action against the errant official.

The source further informed that Misra directed Sarma to carry out repair works as per departmental norms in the stretch where the irregularities were found. The DC asked the Executive Engineer to ensure that works were carried out in day time only and no work was to be done during night time.

Misra warned that the administration will lodge FIRs against errant Government officials/employees and contractors if they misuse Government funds and commit irregularities in execution of projects.
