GUWAHATI, May 4 - The State Government has decided to rename almost all the major roads of Guwahati. The Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today told mediapersons the decision to rechristen the roads was taken as the names were given during the British era. As per the decision, the Gauhati-Shillong (GS) Road, too, has been renamed and it would now be known as Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Road.
While the stretch from Bharalumukh to Jalukbari would continue to be called as Dinesh Goswami Road, the stretch from Bharalumukh to Paltan Bazar has been named as Mahapurush Damodar Dev Path.
Further, the stretch from Six Mile to Narengi VIP Road would now be known as Mahapurush Madhabdev Path, Ganesh Mandir to NH via Hatigaon as Mahapurush Haridev Path, Ganesh Mandir via Kahilipara to Lalganesh as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Path, Kharghuli to Noonmati as Dr Bhupen Hazarika Path, Hengrabari Road to Chachal VIP Point as Khagen Mahanta Path, Guwahati Club Traffic Rotary as Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa Chowk, Sijubari Path as Chaolung Sukapha Path and the Beltola Khanapara Road as Pir Ajan Fakir Path.
