Mahalaya observed

GUWAHATI, Sept 30 - A slew of festivals announce the advent of autumn and the change in nature that unfolds slowly. The biggest festival of the season, that is, Durga Puja is the most awaited festive occasion by all sections of population irrespective of caste, community and language. A rather elaborate and extravagant affair, the fervour that Durga Puja triggers is seen in no other festivals.

The countdown for Durga Puja officially began on Friday with the observation of one of the most auspicious occasions of the Hindus � the Mahalaya. Along with the rest of the country, the citizens of Guwahati also observed the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, which precedes the Durga Puja celebrations a week ahead.

Many people in the city got up at the crack of dawn to observe the rituals related to Mahalaya. Some people also observed fast today and sought the blessings of the divine. This day was also significant as many performed shradh of their parents and forefathers.
