Lyricist Nilakanta Sarmah turns 88

GUWAHATI, July 24 - Nilakanta Sarmah, a noted lyricist, teacher and journalist turns 88 today.

Sarmah, who got recognition in 1970 from AIR Guwahati and subsequently from Dibrugarh and other stations of AIR and later on from Doordarshan, has 17 books of lyrics and several musical features to his credit.

A retired principal of HFCL/BVFCL HSS Namrup, he is also a recipient of State Teacher Award, Literary and one time Artist Award and literary pension. As a journalist, he was a correspondent of The Assam Tribune from 1970 to 1996 and represented other newspapers like The Assam Express, Natun Asamiya and Nilachal from Namrup.

The main books he authored are Geeti Panchoshata, a collection of more than 500 self-composed lyrics, Alekshya Lohori, a collection of ten musical features in one volume and Geeti Chetonar Chanda, which has more than 100 lyrical pieces.
