Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, July 15 AGP legislators Brindaban Goswami and Girindra Kumar Baruah today demanded that the Government should force the NHPC to stop construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydro Power project.

Raising the issue immediately after the Question Hour, Goswami said that though the expert committee formed by the Government suggested that the construction should be stopped, the NHPC was going ahead with the construction. He referred to the agitation launched yesterday by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti in this regard and said that the Government should be able to force the NHPC to stop the project. He also said that a House Committee was also formed to examine the matter and at least till the submission of the report of the committee, the work should have been suspended.

Baruah said that the House Committee submitted an interim report but the Government failed to compel the NHPC to suspend the work on the project site. He said that the Committee is likely to submit its final report shortly and the Government must act on the report.

Technical institutes: AGP member Ramendra Narayan Kalita today said that a number of technical institutes, which are not recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) are functioning in the state. Expressing concern over this phenomenon, he said during the zero hour in the state assembly that such institutes are ruining the careers of a large number of students of the state. He demanded that the Government should take immediate steps to close down such institutes.

In reply, Education Minister Gautam Bora said that a three member committee headed by the Director of Technical Education has been formed to examine the matter and the Deputy Commissioners have also been asked to keep watch so that unrecognized technical institutes are not allowed to admit students. He said that the Directorate of Technical Education has been asked to create awareness among the people so that no student takes admission in the institutes not recognized by the AICTE. On its own, the AICTE also issues advertisements from time to time to create awareness among the people in this regard, he added.
