Land grabbers on the prowl?

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Dec 26 The State machinery seems to have surrendered before the might of the land mafia operating in the State, especially in the capital city a doctor couple being at the receiving end in the latest instance.

What has further worsened the scenario for the doctor couple is that they are allegedly facing an indifferent attitude from the local police station and the circle office concerned, which according to them are also working at the behest of the land-grabbers.

This has now forced the couple to move the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Ashutosh Agnihotri for redressal of their grievances. The couple has even moved the Senior Superintendent of Police (City) in this connection.

A senior official of the district administration has, meanwhile, informed that the DC has asked the police department to tighten the noose on land grabbers operating in the State and take necessary action.

It needs mention here that Guwahati has witnessed a spurt in land grabbing cases over the last few years and the State machinery has failed to ensure security of the common mans property.

The logic is simple. I had purchased the plot measuring one katha and 12 lecha in Saukuchi area under Basistha police station in 2005 and have all pertinent documents authenticating the ownership unlike the other party which is claiming ownership on the strength of a false power of attorney, said aggrieved Dr Swarup Kumar Sarma, who is now based in Nalbari.

I have been staying in Nalbari for quite some time for my work. My wife who is also a doctor with the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital though stays in Guwahati, she could not visit the plot for the last few months and that is when the trespassers stepped in. The trespassers have taken forceful possession of the land for the last few days and have even destructed the thatched house we had erected, Dr Sarma stated.

It appears that there is a nexus between the Government officials and the land grabbers, he said.

Interestingly, according to sources in the police department, the alleged trespassers whose have been asked to report to the police after the DCs intervention have not responded till date.

A senior police official, when contacted, told this reporter that the matter is being taken up and if found guilty, appropriate action will be taken.
