KNP rhino population estimation concludes

KOHORA, March 28 � The 12th rhino population estimation programme came to an end today in the Kaziranga Natimal Park (KNP) with the announcement of an estimated figure of 2,401 plus/minus 100.

During the estimation programme it was found that the adult male population was 663, adult female 802 and unsexed 186. Similarly, the sub-adults in the 4 to 6-year age group were 90 male, 114 female and 90 unsexed. The juvenile rhino population in the 1 to 3-year age group was 251. About 205 calves were found.

During the estimation programme the entire KNP was divided into 81 compartments with the involvement of 40 enumerators and 22 independent observers.
