KK Handique�s Sanskrit book re-released

NEW DELHI, Aug 13 � Yasastilaka and Indian Culture, a classic work by late Krishna Kanta Handique, was re-released by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Dr Mukundakam Sarma today.

The Sanskrit classic by the eminent Indologist and oriental scholar was out of print for many years and it has been re-produced at the joint initiative of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and HRD Ministry.

The function held on the

occasion at the National Museum was presided over by late Handique�s son and former Union Minister Bijoy Krishna Handique. Late Handique�s daughter Ahalya Gogoi was also present.

The book was released as part of the on-going Sanskrit Saptasamaroh. Some 15 books were released today, though late Handique�s book was the only work selected from the Northeast.

Yasastilaka and Indian Culture was the most acclaimed work of KK Handique. The original treatise, written in Sanskrit by Somadeva in the 10th Century, is an encyclopaedic work dealing with Jainism and Indian thought and culture. Prof Handique�s critical dissertation on the Yasastilaka of Somadeva is a monumental contribution in the field of Indological studies.

The well-known Sanskrit, linguist, educationist and scholar, Handique was the founder principal of the JB College of Johrat (1930-47) before he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University in 1948 and continued as such till 1957. He was adorned with Padmashree in 1955 and Padmabhushan in 1967.
