NEW DELHI, June 8 � Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar today said that the Centre would shortly seek a report from the Assam government on reports of large-scale encroachment on areas around the Kaziranga National Park. He was addressing a press conference here to mark the completion of a year in office.
When asked about encroachment on areas adjoining the world famous KNP, Javadekar said that during his visit to the area he had met the local people, but the issue had not arisen then.
�However, since it has come up now, the Ministry of Environment and Forest would seek a report from the Assam government on the encroachments. If need arises I am willing to visit Kaziranga again,� the Minister said.
In a broader perspective, Javadekar said his ministry has sought a report on encroachment on forest areas. The report is expected within two-three months and new technology is being used. �Encroachment on forest area is the State government�s responsibility, but we are working as a team,� said the Minister.
Replying to questions, the Minister said the Government of Assam had started the process of recruiting people for the Rhino Protection Force. �At least 24 cases of poaching had come to our notice and we have taken effective action. We have also taken steps for stopping illegal trade of endangered species,� he said.
�The issue of smuggling of wildlife has also been taken up with our neighbouring country,� he said.
The Minister, in a presentation, said that the total population of rhinos in India had touched 2,669, of which 2,401 were located in the KNP. The population of tiger has also gone up to 2,226, while that of lion has reached 523.
�The Centre has set up four Tiger Protection Forces and one Rhino Protection Force. During the last one year 30 poachers have been killed in encounters,� Javadekar said.
Meanwhile, asked about construction of mega hydropower projects in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra river in Arunachal Pradesh, Javadekar said they have already undertaken environment impact assessment studies of all river basins.
�We have already undertaken a holistic environment study, and have effectively testified before courts,� he said. �The Ministry is also checking the emission level of thermal power projects,� he disclosed.
