GUWAHATI, July 17 - Eminent Kathak exponent Guru Surendra Saikia died at a Lucknow hospital last evening. He had been ailing for some time.
Saikia hailed from Nalbari district and learned Kathak dance from renowned Kathak Guru the late Vikram Singh at Kathak Kendra, Lucknow. A recipient of the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the senior Guru of Kathak Kendra, Lucknow, Saikia was among the most acclaimed names in the discipline of Kathak, with thousands of disciples all over the country as well as abroad.
His death is being viewed as a great loss for the country�s cultural spheres.
He left behind his wife Bibha Saikia and two daughters.
The Amrapaali (Society for Arts), among others, have condoled Saikia�s death.
