Karbi Anglong turmoil outcome of pent-up anger

GUWAHATI, Aug 3 Spontaneous outburst of the pent-up anger of the Karbi Anglong people on the issue of autonomous state has played a major role in the present turbulence in the hills district, claimed leaders of all the political parties operating in the district.

However, there are certain circles that believe that the internal bickerings within the ruling Congress might have contributed to the aggravation in the districts situation.

Significantly, the Youth Congress, NSUI, Karbi Riso Adorbar, which are lenient to the Congress, three factions of the Karbi Students Associations, Karbi Students and Youth Convention and the All India Karbi National Assembly are actively involved in the agitation that started Wednesday on the demand for a separate state.

Senior Congressman and press advisor to the Chief Minister Bharat Chandra Narah claimed that dissidence in the Congress camp has nothing to do with the present unrest in the hill district. The present situation may be attributed to an immediate reaction to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) decision on a separate Telengana state, he said.

According to United Peoples Front (UPF) president Holiram Terang, the outburst of the pent-up anger of the districts people on the separate state issue has led to the present turmoil.

Terang said violence is triggered also by the unorganized outburst of the peoples anger against the gradual curtailment of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Councils (KAAC) powers, rampant and open corruption and misuse of a lot of development funds, among others.

Moreover, there is in general a great sense of resentment against the districts existing Congress leadership, he said, adding, the State Government has curtailed the powers of the KAAC in such a manner that it is interfering even with the primary education and its approval is now needed even in appointing a grade-IV employee.

Hill Peoples Democratic Party (HSDP) working president Chandrakanta Terang said, the present situation is the result of the deceit of the Governments at the Centre and in the State. Both the Governments maintained in 1995 during the signing of the MoU with the ASDC, KSA and the NCHF and during the signing of the MoS with the UPDS in 2011 that there was no agenda to create new states.

But the Central Government created Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh after the 1995 MoU with the Karbi organisations. The Congress CWC has now cleared the proposal for a separate Telengana state, he said.

CPI-ML leader and former MP Dr Jayanta Rongpi also maintained that the last four days developments could be attributed to the spontaneous outburst of the peoples anger on the issue.
