PATACHARKUCHI, July 8 The Kaldia river is posing a serious threat to the residents of Hazirapara near here under Patacharkuchi LAC of Barpeta district due to lack of preventive measures against erosion. The erosion is even posing a threat to the only road of the area through which the villagers communicate for their daily works.
It may mentioned that last year, the rising waters of Kaldia river washed away the embankments and also three stretches of the main road measuring about 20-40 feet inundating a huge area and creating havoc. Some families were also forced to leave their homes due to the threat of erosion. The flood also damaged roads in various parts of the surrounding area, and inflicted large-scale damage to agriculture and fisheries. Surprisingly no repair work or preventive measures were taken in the area for the last one year making the villagers suffer a lot.
Now the government has issued a red alert in some parts of the State forecasting heavy rainfall and the administration is kept ready to tackle any untoward situation. The people of the locality are passing sleepless nights. Though the embankment was repaired by the public as a temporary measure, it cannot protect the villagers. The breached portions are still open, through which the rising water will flow easily and may repeat last years story. The river has taken a uturn in the village and it is hardly one or two metres away from the main road.
The representative of the villagers is moving from pillar to post for some measures to save the village but there has not been any result till the filing of this report. The LP school of the village, one of the polling stations of Patacharkuchi LAC at Barbhaluki village and the village namghar is also under the threat of erosion. People of the area fear that if the present situation continues and urgent protective measures are not taken, the river may flow straight through the village causing immense loss and damages.
