GUWAHATI, Oct 8 - A district-level convention organised by nine community and social organisations at Barpetaroad recently under the banner of Janagosthiya Joutha Sangrami Mancha resolved to launch a joint movement against any conspiracy to snatch citizenship rights of genuine Indian citizens living in Assam.

The organisers of the convention titled Democracy, Citizenship and Development, and held at the Barpetaroad Sahitya Sabha Bhawan with Koch-Rajbongshi leader Sanjay Ray in the chair, also decided to make a significant mobilisation demanding urgent steps to redress the grievances concerning the D voters and the bid to reduce the number of supporting documents for filing claims for inclusion of names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The convention attended by the representatives of the All Koch-Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRSU), All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU), All Assam Bengali Yuba-Chatra Federation, All BTC Minorities Students Union, All Assam Bhojpuri Yuva Chatra Parishad, Forum for Social Harmony, Association for Protection of Citizenship Rights and Basundhara for New Days, described the camps for detention of the D voters as inhumane and demanded their abolition. Besides, the issue of D voters should also be resolved urgently, they demanded.

They vehemently opposed the suggestion placed before the Supreme Court by NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela to reduce the number of supporting documents to be submitted by the claimants in support of their claims as an arbitrary one, said a press release here.
