Jewellery shops go on strike

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, March 2 - The Nikhil Assam Swarna Silpi Samiti has called a three-day strike of all jewellery shops of the State from March 2 to 4 against the imposition of Central excise duty of 1 per cent on manufacture of gold jewellery in the Union Budget.

Introduction of the excise duty will affect the petty traders who will also be subjected to harassment. We therefore want rollback of the excise duty immediately and also reduction in the import duty from 10 per cent to 2 per cent to make the gold price at par with the international market, the Samiti said.
