SILCHAR, Oct 12 - The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated in a befitting manner here on Sunday.
With this year�s theme �My voice, our equal future�, the occasion highlights the need to focus on inclusion, gender quality, and hearing the girls� voices with girls across the globe demanding a life free of gender-based violence, access to health, skills, recognition, and investment as leaders of social change.
To mark the occasion, a function was organised by the District Social Welfare Office in collaboration with the district administration at the conference hall of the Zilla Parishad in presence of Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul and Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti and Udharbond, CEO, Zilla Parishad, ADC (Social Welfare), Joint Director of Health Services and officials of Education department.
Meritorious girl students who secured highest percentage in HSLC and HS examinations from Cachar district were felicitated by the dignitaries and officials on the occasion.
Prizes were also awarded to the students who participated in art, culture and debate competitions that were organised by the administration during the closing ceremony of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi in collaboration with the Education department.
A sticker campaign was taken up under which the logo of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme was put on government vehicles of the district administration as well as on the vehicles of MLAs. Furthermore, a montage of all the successful women of Cachar district was prepared to inspire the young minds.
Speaking on the occasion, Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul called for an end to the problems girls face and to recognise their rights and the unique challenges they encounter in life.
Udharbond MLA, Mihir Kanti Shome and also officials underscored the need to empower girls and help them to get their rights so that they can face the challenges all over the world and meet their needs.
