GUWAHATI, Oct 19 - In a welcome development, the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has decided to introduce a slew of initiatives to make the public transport system more passenger-friendly.

It has also decided to allow special fare concessions for freedom fighters (100 per cent), physically challenged persons (100 per cent), senior citizens, journalists and students. The corporation will also issue monthly and yearly tickets. The concessions will be effective from November this year.

Free travel facility for children up to three years has been raised to five years now.

As part of the revival initiative, the corporation has decided to set up a control room with toll free numbers which will be operational 24x7 from today. The idea behind setting up of the control room is to address the grievances of the general public, said ASTC Managing Director AP Tiwari.
