Independents ahead in Dima Hasao polls

HAFLONG, May 25 � Independents have emerged victorious in the 28-member North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections winning 18 seats, while the ruling Congress got 10 seats, reports PTI.

The results of the 28-member NC Hills Autonomous Council polls were declared today by the election office here.

Candidates from different groups contesting as Independents won the hustings as their organisations are yet to be recognised by the State election office.

Of the 18 Independents, four belong to the Indigenous People�s Party (IPP), two are from Dima Hasao Dol (DHD) and seven are from the former insurgent Dima Hasao Daogah-Jewel group, while the rest are individual Independent candidates.

The winners are Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the outgoing Autonomous Council and Congress candidate Debojit Thaosen, former Rajya Sabha MP and Congress candidate Prakanta Warisa, former DHD-J chairman Mihir Gorlosa (Jewel Gorlosa) and DHD former C-in-C Niranjan Hojai.

The losers are Congress district committee president Mohendra Kemprai, ex-MLA and EM Samarjit Haflongbar, former DHD-Nunisa group chairman and chief of Dima Hasao Dol Dilip Nunisa.

The elections were held peacefully on May 20 when 81 per cent of the 1,21,297 electorate cast their votes to decide the fate of 138 candidates for the 28-seat Autonomous Council in Dima Hasao district.
