Independent candidate seeks protection of tribal people�s identity

GUWAHATI, March 31 - Upamanyu Hazarika, an Independent candidate contesting the Lok Sabha elections from here, today highlighted the issue of tribal people losing their land to non-locals and big government projects.

Hazarika addressed meetings at Jugdal, Sonapur Bazar and New Market in the Sonapur area and also at Paltan Bazar here today.

�Tiwas, Karbis and Bodos have been increasingly losing their land to non-locals and several large government projects. It endangers the identities of these tribal communities, from Sonapur to Morigaon,� he said.

Hazarika also raised the issues of protective legislation securing land, jobs, trade, etc., for locals for preserving the ethnic fabrics of these communities.
