IMD warns of heavy rainfall in Assam

NEW DELHI, May 26 - A red-colour coded weather alert has been issued for Assam and Meghalaya from May 26-28, by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a severe flood warning alert.

The IMD on Tuesday predicted very heavy rainfall in these two North Eastern States. Head of the IMD�s national weather forecasting centre Sathi Devi, said there is a strong flow of south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal, bringing a lot of moisture to these two states.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a severe flood alert for the Brahmaputra river in Assam�s Neamatighat and Jia-Bharali in Jorhat and Sonitpur districts, respectively. .

Meanwhile, the IMD said that the south-westerly winds will be aided by the orographic factors of these two states that will bring in very heavy rainfall, she added.
