Illegal hemp cultivation destroyed in Garo Hills operations

TURA, Oct 27 - A huge quantity of cultivated hemp were destroyed in a joint operation by the civil administration and police in Kuligaon village under Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills.

According to sources, the operation took place between 3 pm-5 pm yesterday, about 5 km from the international border with Bangladesh.

The illegally cultivated hemp was destroyed under the supervision of additional magistrate, SB Sangma with BSF providing the manpower for the operation under BOP Kalaichar.

�A total 14 patches of cultivated land of hemp were identified, of which only three patches have been destroyed.

�About 400 kg of raw hemp was destroyed on the first day of operation. The rest of the patches could not be destroyed but has been marked and identified by the team,� said a release.

The operation was called off as it was getting dark. The operation is expected to be resumed at a later date. About 1,000 kg of raw hemp is still to be destroyed.

The cultivated hemp was meant to be smuggled for consumption in the neighbouring country.
