SIVASAGAR, Jan 31 (PTI): Eminent Assamese mask-making artist Rebakanta Mahanta has been awarded the prestigious 'National Shilpiguru Award' instituted by the Union Ministry of Textiles.
A communique sent by the Ministry to Mahanta said the award is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to develop and preserve the traditional mask-making art of Assam.
The award comprises a cash prize of Rs 6.5 lakh, a citation and a gold coin.
The 75-year-old Mahanta is recipient of several State awards and was declared a master craftsman by the Centre in 2003.
