IMPHAL, Aug 29 - The 88th death anniversary of freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang, who laid down his life fighting the British, was observed across Manipur today.
A State-level function was held at the Jadonang Park at Keishampat in the heart of Imphal town where State Works Minister Th Biswajit led MLAs, leaders of civil societies, organisations and community leaders in offering floral tribute to the statue of Jadonang.
Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board L Radhakishore Singh, MLAs Dr Y Radheshyam and P Saratchandra also attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Biswajit, who also holds the Information and Public Relations portfolio, said, Jadonang still lives among us because we remember his sacrifice and contributions every year.
Lamenting that lack of respect for one another has weakened trust among the people, the minister said that peace alone can bring development, and that peace can be achieved by developing trust among the people.
He assured that a hall would be constructed in the park with the funds contributed by like-minded leaders.
In his speech, Dr Radheshyam said that the people should remember Jadonang for his patriotism, nationalism and sacrifice.
Jadonang was executed by hanging at the Imphal Jail by British rulers on August 29, 1931 for his strong resistance to the British rule.
Remembering his sacrifice, Zeliangrong civil organisations comprising Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB-Assam Manipur and Nagaland), Zeliangrong Youth Front and Zeliangrong Students Union observed three-minute silence as a mark of respect to the freedom fighter at Ramgailong village in Manipur.
