Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, May 2 - Commuters to and from the city to the north bank had a harrowing time today after the traffic flow on the Saraighat Bridge had to be controlled on one side for repairing a damaged portion of the structure.

Officials from the Traffic Police and Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that a hole developed in a portion of the bridge towards the north bank side.

Following that, traffic on the bridge was restricted and movement of vehicles was allowed only from one side.

Repair work was undertaken by the railway staff and is still going on till the time of filing of this report. NFR is responsible for maintenance of the Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge. Officials said that repair work started around 5 pm and is expected to be completed by late night. The repair work led to a massive traffic snarl on the bridge and disrupted movement of vehicles for many hours.
