NEW DELHI, July 24 - Days after BJP accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of being involved in the Water Supply Scam of 2010, the Congress MLA called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi this afternoon, for what he described as an important meeting.

Sarma said the meeting lasted 20-25 minutes and he discussed the general political situation prevailing in the State. He added that further discussions would follow upon return of general secretary in-charge Dr CP Joshi from the State. It was a first meeting with the Congress president after my resignation from the ministry; though I have met vice-president Rahul Gandhi about five times, he told this newspaper.

He said he briefed the Congress president about the developments concerning him in the Saradha Scam. Sarma claimed that he had been given clean chit by the CBI in the multi-crore rupee scandal.

Asked about the BJPs booklet on the Water Scam of 2010, in which he was described a key suspect, he said that the issue did not figure as the party president was not even aware about the issue. But Sarma said he is upset with BJP for making baseless allegations against him. The booklet has several grave errors, like inflated magnitude of the scam. The project, which was of about Rs 80 crore, was described as Rs 200 crore. Even newspaper reports, including that of this newspaper, was wrongly quoted, he alleged.
