Head start for Cong in Panchayat polls

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 � The Indian National Congress (INC) is leading in most of the Panchayat body seats, the results of which were declared till the filing of reports from the various counting centres.

DIBRUGARH: The district largely dominated by Ahoms, Mottocks, Morans, Sonowal Kacharis and tea garden working communities, by and large continues to be the bastion of Indian National Congress but to some extent is on descending trend. Poll results so far has established that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a potent rival of the Congress instead of traditional Asom Gana Parishad.

Of the sixteen Gaon Panchayats counted till 8 pm today, Congress held dominion in 12 gaon panchayats by winning the president�s posts. Congress lost Borbam and Kheremia GPs to Bharatiya Janata Party while Ouphulia and Thintengia GPs went to Asom Gana Parishad. Indian National Congress (INC) also bagged three AP member seats and two Zilla Parishad seats till the filing of this report. Counting of votes is going on and is expected to be over by tomorrow.

The BJP is in neck in neck contest with INC in some of the areas and the party could win a few Gaon Panchayats if not Zilla Parishad seats.

JONAI: Counting of Panchayat votes is going on in Jonai under tight security arrangement. As per results declared so far, three Gram Panchayats out of 15 were captured by ruling Congress. Presidents in these three panchayat, namely Bahir-Sille, Kemi-Jelom and Bahir-Jonai were captured by the ruling Congress along with a bulk of ward members.

The results of the prestigious Jonai panchayat has not yet been declared. The seat along with 11 other panchayats was captured by Independent Sanmilita Gana Sakti last time.

The results for two other Zilla Parishad seats under the subdivision are yet to be declared.

DIGBOI: Counting of the ballot papers cast in the Panchayat polls held on January 30 began today at 9.00 am at the Margherita PHS School in the midst of tight security.

The trends show domination of the Indian National Congress. In the results declared so far, in 4 Gaon Panchayats, Indian National Congress has gained absolute majority while BJP grabbed 2 GPs.

In Ketetong GP, out of a total of 10 Ward Members elected, 9 are from INC while one is an Independent. In Jagun GP, 7 Ward Members have won from INC and 3 from BJP and in Golai GP again 9 Ward Members have won from INC and one has gone to an Independent.

In Boragolai GP, all the 10 elected Ward Members are from INC whereas in Ledo GP, 6 are from BJP and 4 from INC. In Duarmara GP also 6 Ward Members have been elected from BJP and 4 from INC.

In Ketetong GP, Rohita Saiko and MB Chetry of INC have been declared elected as AP councilor and president respectively. In Jagun GP also Sangeeta Deuri and Kalu Bahadur Lama � both from INC � have been elected president and AP councilor respectively. INC has retained its hold in Golai GP with its candidates Prasenjit Baruah (Piklu) and Alpana Rajak declared elected as AP councilor and president respectively.

Counting is likely to continue till tomorrow.

KOHORA: The Indian National Congress (INC) captured most of the panchayat seats in Kaziranga Mouza area under Bokakhat Sub Division. The party won in eight wards under West Kaziranga Goan Panchayat, capturing 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 number Wards. The remaining two wards, number 1 and 2, were captured by Nirman Gut Party.

Lakhan Karmakar, who contested for the post of president of West Kaziranga Goan Panchayat with Congress ticket, defeated his rival Anup Tati of BJP by a margin of 500 votes. Karmakar got about 1,700 votes. Similarly, Lalita Nath of Congress won the post of councillor in the same panchayat.

Likewise, in Madhya Kaziranga Goan Panchayat, Congress won in six Wards, BJP in two wards, and Independent won in one ward. Sashi Gogoi of Congress, who contested for the post of president of Madhya Kaziranga Goan Panchayat, defeated her nearest rival of BJP.

NALBARI: At Barbhag, Congress candidates Parbati Kakati (gaon panchayat), Dinesh Kalita (anchalik panchayat) at No 47 Panchayat, Bijuli Talulkdar (gaon panchayat) and Pranb Kakati (anchalik panchayat) at No 48 have already been elected.

The ruling Congress is facing stiff challenge at Barkshetri LAC in Nalbari district.

In Bhangnamari Zilla Parisad seat, Congress candidate Abdul Majid suffered a major setback as AIUDF candidate Alimuddin Ahmed is leading by 1,800 votes till the filling of this report. In Mukalmua and Daulashal ZPC, Independant candidates are dominating Congress candidates.

Congress candidate Kashiram Talulkdar is leading in Barbhag ZPC. Moreover, in Nalbari LAC, Congress candidates Bitumani Deka in Khata Batahgila, Sapala Medhi at Bahjani and Arati Kalita at Ghograpar are in better position.

Thousands of party supporters gathered at Nalbari town as counting of votes of Panchayat election in Nalbari district began at Gurdon HS School.

According to the information available, till the filling of this report the ruling Congress is leading at various gaon panchayat (president), gaon panchayat (members) and anchalik panchayat members.

The ruling Congress also leading at Belsor, Chamata and Pokoa Zilla Parisad under Dharmapur LAC while the Asom Gana Parisad (AGP) is leading at Natun Dehar Zilla Parisad seats.

In Kalarchar Panchayat, the AIUDF candidates won the GP president and anchalik member. Of 10 GP member, AIUDF clinched 8 seats. According to the latest information, 13 seats of GP president and Anchalik Parisad members were declared.
